Finger Lakes Works Event

Students Learn About Career Opportunities at “Finger Lakes Works … With Their Hands!” Event

A group of 20 students from South Seneca travelled to Rodman Lott & Son Farms near Seneca Falls to join students from other area high schools and learn about trades related careers.

The event, sponsored by Finger Lakes Works, is an initiative designed to expose high school students to some of the many viable career paths available in trade work in the region. More than 50 local businesses were represented, from fields including welding, plumbing, electrical work, advanced manufacturing and agriculture.

"This event provides students the opportunity to gain insight into trades related career paths,” said Scott Anderson, a guidance counselor at South Seneca High School. “The employment opportunities which are shared at this event are both enlightening and empowering."

Students who attended were guided around different stations, most of which included hands-on activities relating to the career represented. Question and answer sessions provided information about what training is necessary for certain careers and how to acquire that training.

This annual event is intended to get the message out that the community has a need for well-trained and hardworking trade workers, and that there are exciting and rewarding careers available in those fields.
