CSforALL Consortium and South Seneca Develop Technology Education The South Seneca School District is taking steps along with an organization called the CSforALL Consortium to advance computer science education for all students.
The CSforALL Consortium is a national hub that works to enable all students to achieve computer science literacy as an integral part of their educational experience at all age levels. This year, the CSforALL consortium teamed up with TST BOCES and Cornell to help bring this mission to the region and support school districts in developing their computer science curriculum.
A generous grant from by Dell, totaling $140,000, has provided TST BOCES and component districts such as South Seneca access to a variety of cutting edge technology that can be implemented into any grade level’s curriculum. Some of the equipment includes: a 3D printer, microcomputers, 360-degree cameras, virtual reality systems and Parrot Bebop Drones.
A recent planning workshop held at Putnam-Northern Westchester BOCES by the CSforALL Consortium was attended by representatives from all TST BOCES component districts, including faculty representing South Seneca. With the support of South Seneca administration and the TST BOCES CSforALL team, the district is setting goals and developing a plan to advance the district’s computer literacy curriculum.
“We're working to ensure that our students have basic and advanced technical skills that will benefit them in today's workplace,” said Middle/High School Principal Tim Houseknecht.
Initial goals for the district will include reviewing the existing curriculum to find where computer science education needs to be improved and providing professional development to educators, tailored individually to their knowledge and teaching needs. This effort will be driven by a “Technology for All” team and support by district and building administration.
Ultimately, the Technology for All team at South Seneca will work to provide uniform coverage for all students, to build a foundation of computer science literacy that can be expanded throughout their educational career. Skills can then be honed and specialized according to a student’s goals and aspirations.
